The following joint communique was issued today by the Kenya and Somaliland

  “Kenya and Somali land would continue to work together to promote peace and stability, and in pursuit of shared prosperity,” the communique read. During their discussions, the leaders focused their attention on the expansion of bilateral trade. At the conclusion of the official Visit, President Abdi, expressed gratitude to Uhuru for the progress made in deepening bilateral relations during the visit, as well as the warm welcome and generous hospitality accorded to him and his delegation 1. Somaliland government has acknowledged a change on the country’s quest for recognition within the Int’l community

  The Somaliland government has acknowledged a change on the country’s quest for recognition within the International community. This was stated by Foreign minister Prof. Yasin Haji Mahmud Hiir ‘Faraton’, during an interview with Geeska Afrika in Hargeisa where he also expressed the government’s delight on news that the Kenyan Cabinet is debating the recognition of Somaliland. “While we have good relations with a number of countries whose foreign policies we respect, news that the government of Kenya is rethinking its position on the recognition of our country is of importance since we have maintained  multifaceted relations with the neighbouring East African Country” said Prof Faraton Adding that the long term relations with Kenya has eased with close cooperation in terms of trade not to mention the large number of skilled Kenyans working in diverse sectors all over Somaliland, the foreign minister said regular exchange of official  delegations has strengthened cooperation. “T

Prospects of Success or Failure: Negotiations between Somaliland and the Federal Government

A new round of discussions was held in Djibouti June 14-18 between the unilaterally declared “Republic of Somaliland” and the federal Republic of Somalia. The two countries’ presidents’ countries attended the talks as well as the president and prime minister of Djibouti and Ethiopia, the US ambassador to Somalia, the president of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and representatives of the European Union. There is nothing new to justify restarting talks at the present time. In fact, disagreement has been sharper than ever since Presidents Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo of Somalia and Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland took power in 2017. Both have accused each other of failing to meet their obligations under previous agreements and causing their collapse. Although Farmajo issued the first official apology earlier this year for crimes committed by the Somali government in Somaliland under President Muhammad Siad Barre (1969-1991), it is unlikely that there will be any
